2v2 defending

2v2 Defending Drills

31 football drills for this theme, filtered from the Football Coach Hub library with full set-ups and coaching points.

2v2 is the smallest practice where defending becomes a team job. One player presses the ball, the other covers the space behind — and the pair have to talk. Get this right and back fours, midfield pairs and pressing traps all become easier to coach later on.

Every drill below comes from the drill library and lists its area size, player numbers, ability level and kit, so you can pick one that suits the group rather than shrinking a professional session.

Press and cover: the two jobs

The nearest defender presses the ball and shows the attacker one way — usually towards the touchline or their weaker foot. The second defender drops a yard or two behind and inside, ready for the pass or the moment the first defender is beaten.

Swap the roles constantly. As soon as the ball is passed sideways, the coverer becomes the presser and the presser recovers. Coaching that switch is the whole point of a 2v2.

  • First defender: close, set, show one way.
  • Second defender: a yard behind, a yard inside, eyes on the ball.
  • Roles switch the instant the ball moves across.
  • Never both press the same player.

What defenders should be shouting

Silent pairs get beaten. Give players two or three words each so communication is a habit rather than an instruction from the touchline.

  • "Mine" — I am pressing this one.
  • "Behind you" — the runner is coming.
  • "Show him out" — force it wide.
  • "Away" — clear the danger, do not play out of it.

Area sizes and progressions

Start in a 20 x 15 yard box with two mini goals. If the defenders never win the ball, shrink the width; if the attackers never get a shot away, widen it. Change the space before you change the rules.

  • 20 x 15 yards with two mini goals for U10 to U12.
  • 25 x 20 yards and full goals with a keeper from U13.
  • Progression: give attackers a third player as a bounce pass on the side.
  • Regression: attackers must score in a cone gate rather than a goal.

Common questions

How do you coach 2v2 defending?

Give each defender one job: the nearest player presses and shows the attacker one way, the second covers a yard behind and inside. Then coach the switch — the moment the ball travels sideways, the roles swap.

What size area should a 2v2 defending drill be?

About 20 x 15 yards with two mini goals for U10 to U12, and 25 x 20 yards with a keeper from U13 upward. Adjust the size before you add rules.

What age should you start 2v2 defending practices?

From U10, once players understand 1v1 defending. Before that, defending in pairs usually turns into both players chasing the same ball.

How long should a 2v2 defending block last?

Eight to twelve minutes in short rounds of about ninety seconds, with plenty of rotation. Duels are tiring and quality drops off quickly.
