What is the best shape for goal kicks in 7v7?
A simple 2-1 in front of the keeper works well: two defenders wide at the edges of the box and a midfielder showing in the middle. Other players push up to stretch the pitch.
In 7v7, goal kicks are where young teams concede most cheap goals. The fix is a simple shape, a keeper who looks before passing, and defenders who receive facing forward. These four practices build the habit step by step, ending in a real game.
Four practices to play out from the back
1. Keeper to wide defender 3v1
First pass out of the box
- Set up
- Keeper plus two wide defenders against one presser in a 30 x 25 yard area. Defenders score by dribbling over the halfway cones.
- Coaching points
- Defenders split wide to the edge of the box, open their body to face forward. Keeper passes to the side away from the presser.
- Make it harder
- Add a second presser once the retreat line is passed.
2. Build-up 4v3 to end zone
Finding the free player
- Set up
- Keeper and three outfielders against three pressers. Score by passing into a 5-yard end zone. Pressers win the ball and shoot at the goal.
- Coaching points
- One player drops in front of the keeper, two stay wide. If they press wide, play through the middle.
- Make it harder
- Pressers start inside the retreat line to make the first pass harder.
3. Bounce pass to midfield
Playing through the press
- Set up
- A defender receives from the keeper, plays into a midfielder who sets it back or turns. Rotate positions every few reps.
- Coaching points
- Midfielder checks away then comes short. Receive on the half-turn to see forward.
- Make it harder
- Add a passive then live defender behind the midfielder.
4. 7v7 goal kick game
Build-up in the real game
- Set up
- Normal 7v7, but every restart is a goal kick. A goal scored after a team plays out to halfway counts double.
- Coaching points
- Be patient. If everything is covered, a longer pass to the far side is a good decision too.
- Make it harder
- Remove the double-goal rule once the habit is there.

How does the retreat line help?
On goal kicks the opposition must drop behind the retreat line until the ball is received, giving your defenders time to take a touch and look forward.
What if we keep losing the ball?
Mistakes are part of learning. Praise brave decisions, and teach players that a longer pass to the far side is a fine option when the short ones are covered.
