Coach's guide to scoring players
Tries it in training. Works sometimes, usually without pressure.
Does it most of the time in training and sometimes in matches.
Does it in matches under pressure and could show a teammate.
Ratings run from 40 (just starting) to 99 (everything mastered). Each corner is scored from its badges, and the overall is the average of the four corners. Cards turn Silver at 60 and Gold at 75.
Technical / Tactical
What the player can do with the ball, and how well they understand the game.
- First touch and ball control
- Passing, dribbling, shooting and defending technique
- Decisions: when to pass, dribble or shoot
- Positioning with and without the ball
Physical
How the player moves: agility, balance, coordination, speed and stamina — always relative to their age and growth.

- Changing direction and stopping
- Speed off the mark
- Keeping going in the last ten minutes
Psychological
Confidence, concentration, resilience and the courage to try things.
- Bravery to try a skill

- Concentration through the session
- Composure under pressure
Social
How the player works with others: communication, teamwork, respect and leadership.

- Fair play and respect for officials
- Helping others learn
What to expect by age group
U7–U9
Fun, lots of touches and falling in love with the ball.
- Most badges at Developing is normal and healthy
- Reward effort and bravery more than outcomes
- Keep reviews short — one 'well done' and one 'next step'
U10–U12
The 'golden age' of skill learning — technique under pressure and early decision-making.
- Expect a mix of Developing and Consistent
- Weaker foot and scanning are key targets
- Start involving players in setting their own goals
U13–U16
Speed of play, game understanding and leadership — with care for growth spurts.
- Physical scores can dip during growth spurts — that's normal
- Players should co-write their focus targets
- Mastered means they do it in matches, every week
A simple season rhythm
- Weeks 1–3: Observe, add notes, then save a Pre-season baseline review.
- Every session: Tap a level when you see a badge happen. Watch 3–4 players per session, not the whole squad.
- Every 4–6 weeks: Refresh each player's focus targets (up to 5) and plan sessions using the linked drills.
- Each term: Save a review, share the card with parents and celebrate the biggest improvers.
- End of season: Print Gold/Silver/Bronze cards for presentation night.
Talking to parents
- Start with a strength: “Isla's scanning has been brilliant this term.”
- Give one next step and how to help at home: “We're working on her weaker foot — kicking against a wall is perfect.”
- Never compare players. The card shows their journey, not a league table.
