Football drills for 9 year olds

Eight fun football drills for 9 year olds with setup, coaching points and progressions, built for U9 and U10 grassroots teams.

Football drills for 9 year olds should still feel like play, but players at this age are ready for real decisions: when to pass, when to dribble, where to run. The eight practices below mix ball-heavy games with 1v1s, keep ball and finishing, and each one lists the setup, one or two coaching points and a simple progression as the group improves.

8 football drills for 9 year olds

1. Robin Hood dribbling

Dribbling and shielding

8-16 players 8 min 1 ball each, cones
Set up
Everybody dribbles in a 25x25 yard area. Two robbers without a ball try to steal one and keep it; the dispossessed player becomes a robber too.
Coaching points
Keep the ball close, put your body between the robber and the ball, look for space.
Make it harder
Robbers must win the ball cleanly rather than kick it away.

2. Pass, move, call

Passing technique and communication

6-16 players 8 min Cone gates, 1 ball per pair
Set up
Pairs pass through cone gates in a 25x25 yard area. The receiver must call the passer's name before the ball is played or the gate does not count.
Coaching points
Inside of the foot, firm along the ground, call early so the passer knows you are free.
Make it harder
Count how many gates a pair can hit in two minutes, then try to beat it.

3. 1v1 to two gates

Attacking and defending 1v1

6-16 players 10 min Cone gates, balls, bibs
Set up
A 15x12 yard channel with a gate at each end. Attacker tries to dribble through the far gate; if the defender wins it they attack the other gate.
Coaching points
Attack at speed, change direction not just speed, defenders stay on their feet.
Make it harder
Add a five-second time limit so attackers learn to commit early.

4. Three-team keep ball

Possession with transition

9-15 players 10 min Bibs, cones, balls
Set up
Three teams of three in a 25x25 yard area. Two teams keep the ball from the third; the team that loses it becomes the defenders.
Coaching points
Spread out, offer two passing options, react instantly when the ball is lost.
Make it harder
Limit possession teams to two touches.

5. Shooting circuit

Striking the ball with both feet

6-14 players 10 min Goal, cones, balls
Set up
Two queues either side of the goal. Players shoot after two touches: right-footers from the right queue, left-footers from the left, then swap sides.
Coaching points
Standing foot beside the ball, strike through the middle, follow in for rebounds.
Make it harder
Serve the ball across the shooter for a moving-ball finish.

6. End zone game

Passing forward with a purpose

8-14 players 12 min Cones, bibs, balls
Set up
4v4 on a 30x25 yard pitch with an end zone at each end. Score by dribbling or receiving a pass inside the end zone.
Coaching points
Keep the ball until a gap opens, then play forward early.
Make it harder
Only a pass into the end zone counts, so players must time their runs.

7. Headers and volleys from the hands

Coordination and brave attacking

6-14 players 8 min Goal, balls
Set up
A server throws underarm from the side; attackers finish with a volley from inside six yards. Rotate the server and keeper every two minutes.
Coaching points
Watch the ball onto the laces, get in line with the flight, celebrate every finish.
Make it harder
The server bounces the throw so the finish is a half-volley.

8. 7v7 match with a twist

Applying skills in the game

10-16 players 15 min Goals, bibs, balls
Set up
A normal small-sided match, but each team earns a bonus point for five consecutive passes or a one-two in the build-up.
Coaching points
Let them play, praise the bonus-point moments, coach one thing at water breaks only.
Make it harder
Remove the bonus points for the last five minutes and see if the habits stick.

A 60-minute session plan for 9 year olds

Most grassroots U9 sessions run for an hour after school. Short, high-energy blocks keep attention high and give every player hundreds of touches.

  • 0-10 min: arrival game such as Robin Hood dribbling with a ball each.
  • 10-22 min: technical practice, usually passing through gates or a shooting circuit.
  • 22-35 min: opposed practice — 1v1 to two gates or three-team keep ball.
  • 35-55 min: end zone game or a 7v7 match with a twist.
  • 55-60 min: penalties and a quick well done to finish.

What U9 players are ready for

At 9 years old players can combine with a partner, understand simple rules and cope with a defender trying to win the ball. It is the right age to introduce 1v1s, keep ball with a purpose and striking the ball with both feet.

England's mini soccer format means 7v7 at U9 and U10 with roll-on substitutions, so rotate positions and goalkeeper duties. The wins that matter are touches, attempts at skills and players asking to stay longer.

Drills for 9 year olds FAQs

What football drills suit 9 year olds?

Nine year olds thrive on game-like practices: 1v1 gate battles, three-team keep ball, shooting circuits and small-sided matches. Keep a ball per player where possible, rotate activities every eight to ten minutes and always finish with a game.

How long should a U9 training session be?

Around 60 minutes works well. Split it into a fun warm up, one technical practice, one opposed practice such as 1v1s, and 15-20 minutes of small-sided football.

What should you coach at 9 years old?

Dribbling, first touch, passing and shooting, plus simple ideas like spreading out and finding space. One or two coaching points per activity is plenty — positions and detailed tactics can wait until U11 and U12.

What size ball do 9 year olds use?

In England, U9 and U10 teams play 7v7 with a size 4 ball on a pitch roughly 60x40 yards. Mini soccer rules mean no league tables, so keep the focus on development and enjoyment.

How do I keep a 9 year old squad engaged?

Score everything, give practices fun names, keep queues to two or three players, and let them compete in pairs and small teams. Praise trying a skill even when it does not come off.
