Objectives

  • -Manipulate the ball into every direction on the clock face
  • -Improve balance and body shape while moving the ball
  • -Prepare players for turning away from pressure

Setup

  1. 1A ring of twelve cones set out like a clock face in a 18 x 18 yards area.
  2. 2Split the group so the attacking side always has one spare player, and park the spare bibs on the halfway cone.
  3. 3One ball per player inside the ring.

Coaching instructions

  1. 1Coach calls a clock number and players move the ball to that cone with a named skill.
  2. 2Players return to the middle before the next call.
  3. 3Alternate between sole, inside and outside of the foot.
  4. 4The spare player joins whichever side has the ball, so the attack always works with a plus-one.
  5. 5A goal or completed end action counts double if the spare player touched the ball in the build-up.

Coaching points

  • -Small steps around the ball to keep balance
  • -Skill executed before the sprint
  • -Use both feet
  • -Find the free player quickly before the defence shuffles across

Common mistakes

  • -Turning into a crowded part of the ring
  • -Standing over the ball between calls
  • -Spare player standing still instead of offering an angle
