With the ball
- Run in behind to push the defence back, or drop in to link play.
- Hold the ball up and bring team-mates into play.
- Attack the near post when crosses come in.
Without the ball
- Press the centre-back on the ball and curve your run to cut off one side.
- Stop the opposition switching play across their back line.
- Drop to cover the holding midfielder when the team is defending deep.

Position-by-position roles
GK — Goalkeeper
Organises the back three and plays out short.
With the ball: Offer a safe back-pass option by moving to the side of the goal the ball is on. Without: Start high enough to sweep balls played in behind the defence.
LB — Full-back
Defends the left side and supports the left midfielder.
With the ball: Give width early so the winger can come inside. Without: Tuck in towards the centre-back when the ball is on the far side.
CB — Centre-back
Covers behind and steps into midfield with the ball.
With the ball: Split wide when the keeper has the ball to create a passing angle. Without: Protect the space behind before stepping to win the ball.
RB — Full-back
Defends the right side and supports the right midfielder.
With the ball: Give width early so the winger can come inside. Without: Tuck in towards the centre-back when the ball is on the far side.
LM — Wide midfielder
Gives width and runs beyond the strikers.
With the ball: Hug the touchline to stretch the opposition's defence. Without: Track the opposition's full-back or wide midfielder back.
CM — Central midfielder
The playmaker: controls tempo and switches play.
With the ball: Receive on the half-turn so you can play forward. Without: Press the opposition midfielder nearest you as soon as they receive.
RM — Wide midfielder
Gives width and tracks the opposition winger.
With the ball: Hug the touchline to stretch the opposition's defence. Without: Track the opposition's full-back or wide midfielder back.
LS — Striker
Runs in behind and presses the centre-back.
