DEF — Centre-back
Covers the whole back line and switches play.
With the ball: Split wide when the keeper has the ball to create a passing angle. Without: Protect the space behind before stepping to win the ball.
DM — Holding midfielder
Sits in front of the defender and keeps the team balanced.
With the ball: Show for the ball between or just in front of the centre-backs. Without: Screen passes into the opposition striker's feet.
LM — Wide midfielder
Gives width on the left and recovers to defend.
With the ball: Hug the touchline to stretch the opposition's defence. Without: Track the opposition's full-back or wide midfielder back.
RM — Wide midfielder
Gives width on the right and recovers to defend.
With the ball: Hug the touchline to stretch the opposition's defence. Without: Track the opposition's full-back or wide midfielder back.
AM — Attacking midfielder (No. 10)
Plays between the lines and supports the striker.
With the ball: Find pockets between the opposition's midfield and defence. Without: Cut off the pass into the opposition's holding midfielder.
