Managing Game Time Fairly

A simple system that keeps development honest and stops Sunday-morning arguments.

Why this matters

Players improve by playing. At grassroots ages, minutes on the pitch are the single biggest development factor you control.

The common problem

Substitutions get made emotionally — chasing a result, rewarding effort, hiding a weaker player. Over a season the gap between the most and least used player becomes enormous.

Try this instead

  • Decide your rotation before kick-off and write it down.
  • Rotate by clock, not by scoreline: fixed blocks of minutes.
  • Track minutes across the season, not just the game.
  • Tell players and parents the system so nobody has to guess.
  • Give every player time in the part of the pitch they want to play in at least once a month.

On the pitch

With ten players in a 7v7, plan three rolling subs every eight minutes. Written on a card, it takes the decision — and the argument — out of the moment.

Questions to ask

  • Who has played the fewest minutes this month?
  • Who only ever plays in one position?
  • Would I be happy if my child had this player's season?

Your coaching challenge

Track minutes for every player across your next three fixtures.

Reflect afterwards

What did the numbers tell you that your memory didn't?
